13 Common Beginner Pickleball Mistakes And How To Fix Them
We’ve already tackled a few common beginner mistakes in pickleball—like hanging out in no man’s land, hitting to the forehand, and overusing spin. Now, let’s move on to two more habits that can quietly cost you points without you even realizing it. Both have to do with timing and positioning—two fundamentals that make all the difference once the rally heats up.
One happens right after you serve, when it’s tempting to move forward too soon. The other shows up when you’re facing a hard-hitting opponent and feel the urge to swing back. In both cases, a little patience and control can turn reactive play into confident, well-placed shots.
MISTAKE #5: Scooting up when you serve
This is another mistake that I used to make all the time. You don’t see this much in advanced play because, by that point, most players have been burned by it and learned their lesson!
Here’s what typically happens: after serving, a player starts creeping forward, sometimes even stepping past the baseline before the opponent hits the return. The problem? The return serve has to bounce before you can hit it—thanks to the double-bounce rule. If you’re too close, a deep return can easily land at your feet, putting you in an awkward position or forcing a fault if you volley it early.
The fix: Stay disciplined and hold your ground behind the baseline until the ball bounces. Use that extra second to read your opponent’s return and prepare for your next shot. This is especially important against more experienced players, who often drive their returns deep to push you back.
And remember, this doesn’t just apply when you serve—stay back when your partner serves, too! You never know when you’ll be the one returning that next shot. Staying patient and ready behind the line gives you far more control over the point and sets you up for a smoother transition to the kitchen line later.
MISTAKE# 6: Swinging at power shots
Here’s a classic one. When a fastball comes rocketing toward you, your instinct is to swing hard to send it back with equal force. But in pickleball, that’s usually the last thing you should do.
Power shots already have plenty of energy behind them. The goal isn’t to add power—it’s to redirect it. When you swing, you increase the risk of mishits, pop-ups, or sending the ball long. Instead, think of your paddle like a wall: just meet the ball, hold steady, and let the opponent’s power do the work.
The fix: Focus on blocking, not swinging. Keep your paddle firm but relaxed, angle it slightly to control direction, and absorb the shot. With practice, you’ll find that blocks can be just as effective—if not more so—than forceful counter-hits.
It takes patience and confidence to resist that urge to swing, but once
you master the block, power players won’t intimidate you anymore. You’ll be able to turn their aggression into your advantage, often forcing them into errors or setting yourself up for a winning dink battle at the net.
By staying patient after your serve and learning to block instead of swing, you’ll not only cut down on unforced errors but also start dictating the pace of the game. Pickleball is all about control—knowing when to move, when to wait, and how to use your opponent’s power to your benefit.
REMEMBER…
Keep practicing these habits, and you’ll soon notice your rallies lasting longer, your shots landing smarter, and your overall game feeling more strategic and composed.

TOURNAMENT TEE SELECTION
Many of our tournaments allow players to select what tees they will play from. It is important that players sign up for the correct tees. Any player can play from the Gold tees, regardless of their age or index, if they so choose. But only players that qualify may play from the Purple/Green tees. To qualify a player must be 70, or older, or have an index of 18.7, or higher. It is very difficult for the Golf Shop to make tee changes at the last minute. Any player that plays from incorrect tees risks disqualification. Typically, one team member will sign up a 4-man or 2-man team, so it is imperative that that team member sign up their team from the correct tees.
WEBSITE TOURNAMENT SIGN UP
Please continue to use the website, https://pmlmgc.com to sign up and pay for tournaments. Using the website for tournament sign up and payment makes it easier for the club and the Golf Shop to manage tournaments. Go to pmlmgc.com to see the tournament schedule.
JOIN THE MEN’S GOLF CLUB
Any male persons who are current property owners, their siblings, sons, nephews, sons-in-law, and PMLA employees are eligible to join the men’s golf club. November Pine Needlers Column
SANDY SMITH
Well, here we are in the 2nd of the "ber" months...a lot has been happening recently, including the 49er Festival in September, and the Celebrating Friendship Quilt Show in October. Now it is on to celebrating Thanksgiving and the Advent event at Guild. Fun and family is up next on the agenda for us all.
The winner of the beautiful 49er Festival Heritage Quilt was Marlene Bonomo. Her comment was that "I loved this quilt from the first moment I saw it" Needless to say she was delighted, as are we. Her mother was a quilter, so Marlene was quite happy as displayed by the grin on her face.
You are wished the best Thanksgiving ever...Enjoy family, friends, and all the goodies you can eat!
A huge thank you to all who helped with the Quilt Show, it was beautiful and appreciated by many. A quote from the lovely book put together by Lynn Sigafoose....."Seeds of kindness will yield a bountiful harvest of blessings". Being a White Glove Lady allowed me to hear so many compliments, ooohhhs and ahhhs that most didn't get to hear. I was certainly blessed, as were many others. Another beautiful quote "The greatest gift that a quilter can receive for her work is appreciation" This was expressed over and over both days. Great job everyone!
The Pine Needlers Quilt Guild meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month, under the Library at 10:00 a.m. The November meeting will be on the 18th. If you come at 9:30 there is a Meet and Greet, so that we can catch up with all the goings on with each other. Also, after the meeting if you bring lunch and a project you can sew with us til 3.
Next on the Guild Agenda is our Advent event. Always fun and exciting to get a little love gift each day in December. I open mine early, turn on the Christmas music, have a cup of coffee, post on the Guild FB site, and enjoy! Hope to encourage others to play a part this time. Glad I started early this year, because several things sidetracked me last month...only 3 left! Yay!
Remember the Pine Needlers Quilt Guild meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month except in December (no meeting in December) Tuesday November 18th at 10:a.m. under the Library.
If you have any questions please call President Judi (with an I) 650 254-1439 or V.P. Michele (with one l) 209 962-4327
