TOURNAMENT TEE SELECTION

Many of our tournaments allow players to select what tees they will play from. It is important that players sign up for the correct tees. Any player can play from the Gold tees, regardless of their age or index, if they so choose. But only players that qualify may play from the Purple/Green tees. To qualify a player must be 70, or older, or have an index of 18.7, or higher. It is very difficult for the Golf Shop to make tee changes at the last minute. Any player that plays from incorrect tees risks disqualification. Typically, one team member will sign up a 4-man or 2-man team, so it is imperative that that team member sign up their team from the correct tees.

WEBSITE TOURNAMENT SIGN UP

Please continue to use the website, pmlmgc.com, to sign up and pay for tournaments. Using the website for tournament sign up and payment makes it easier for the club and the Golf Shop to manage tournaments. Go to pmlmgc.com to see the tournament schedule.

JOIN THE MEN’S GOLF CLUB

Any male persons who are current property owners, their siblings, sons, nephews, sons-in-law, and PMLA employees are eligible to join the men’s golf club. Go to pmlmgc.com and click on the button, Join the Club, to see the many benefits of club membership, as well as the ability to sign up on line. Applications are also available in the Golf Shop, or you can contact our Handicap/Membership Chair, Ted Toffey. 13 Common Beginner Pickleball Mistakes And How To Fix Them

One of the most frustrating experiences we can have as athletes are making mistakes without knowing the causes or what to do about them. I’ve experienced this many times and I know exactly where beginning pickleball players are coming from. Adding on top of that, it can be hard to get information about proper pickleball strategy and technique considering the youth of the sport. I’m going to help you out today by talking about a number of common beginner pickleball mistakes that people make and how to get rid of them.

Before we begin, I want to share something important with you. I’ve made all of the mistakes that you see on this list. Every single one of them. This is why I know how to talk about them. Although I’m going to go through how to fix these issues, remember that changing anything about your pickleball game will take time! So stick with it!

Mistake #1: Staying in no man’s land

Throughout a pickleball point, there are two main places to stand: the baseline and the kitchen line. For the most part, you shouldn’t be standing in any other area on the court. If you’re not standing in one of these areas then you’re standing in a place called no man’s land.

Hanging out in no man’s land is a very common and consistent mistake that beginners, and even intermediate players, make. It’s OK, I’ve done it too. “Staying in no man’s land” means standing in the area between the baseline and the kitchen line. This is the last place that you want to be standing and here’s why.

Right off the bat, standing in the no man’s land means that it’s easier for your opponent to hit shots towards your feet. Attempting to return these shots are difficult by itself, but even harder because you’re typically running at the same time. Returning a shot to your feet while running is borderline impossible. And if you do manage to make contact with the ball, it will either sail up into the air for your opponent to smash, or go right into the net.

The other reason why you don’t want to be in no man’s land is that you are vulnerable to cross-court dinks. Check out this image.

Imagine you’re the blue circle at the bottom of the image. Since you’re in no man’s land, an opponent can simply hit a cross-court dink and it will be nearly impossible to return. However, if you were standing at the kitchen line, then you’re able to return the shot easily.

It’s true that an opponent can simply lob a shot over you while you’re standing at the kitchen line. However, lob shots are typically risky and can either be smashed or they can go out. A cross-court dink is much safer and much more effective.

If you want to improve your game, make sure you get up to the kitchen line once the serve and return-serve have been executed!

MISTAKE# 2: Not sprinting to the kitchen

Pickleball is primarily played at the kitchen. Not the baseline, not the middle of the court, but at the kitchen. It’s important to get to the kitchen as quickly as you can. Similar to what I said about no man’s land, if you saunter around in the middle of the court, you’re a target waiting to be smashed to. And you certainly don’t want that! If you lack mobility and you can’t sprint, just try to get up to the kitchen as quickly as you can.

If a ball is heading your way while you’re running to the kitchen, stop in your tracks and focus on getting the ball back over.

Running to the kitchen and returning a ball at the same time is a difficult task to accomplish and will often lead to popping the ball up for your opponent to easily smash.

Friends of the Lake Plays Pictionary

Virginia Richmond

The August Friends of the Lake event was a fun-filled evening with friends, boat rides, potluck supper, and games.

Karen Hopkins organized the event in which boat teams collected clues during boat rides around the lake and then used the clues to identify well-known movies and sports teams. Each member of the winning team was awarded a PML gift card.

Our boat drivers included Lisa Artacho, Al Rojas and Paul Gibson. Congratulations to the winning boat team and captain Lisa Artacho.

Our final event of the summer will be “Bingo on the Beach” on Sunday, September 7, organized by Dora and Dennis Hockett.

Friends of the Lake is a social club for people who care about and enjoy Pine Mountain Lake. We hold fun member events each month during the summer and also organize the annual Boat Parade and Lake Swim for everyone’s enjoyment. To join Friends of the Lake and receive information on each event, please send your contact information and a check for $20/family to Friends of the Lake, PO Box 591, Groveland, CA 95321. Pine Mountain Garden Club

September 2025, Linda Neuschwander

What a beautiful summer we’ve enjoyed so far! Not too hot, and often sporting a lovely warm mild breeze. Tourists and neighbors alike have enjoyed a classic Sierra Foothills summer. And how fun has it been watching those little fuzzball baby turkeys (AKA Poults) grow feathers to replace the fuzz and get busy scratching up the real estate looking for every bug and weed they can spot. And don’t forget the cute little spotties who have blossomed into graceful does and clueless young bucks who wander around wondering what the awkward pokey thing that just showed up on their heads. Local bucks and does are for the most part busy foraging. And thanks to our bountiful winter rain, the tasty growy greens are plentiful. All and all Groveland is well groomed thanks to our local critters and we residents who are doing our part to keep our land trimmed and fire safe.

The PM Garden Club has been enjoying the summer spiffing up our own gardens and visiting the gardens of friends and neighbors. But we have not neglected our beloved

Jail Garden and are very grateful to members and associates who have spent time keeping the place watered, trimmed and weeded. We did buckle down for an early morning work session that was fun, rewarding and productive. Thank you for your faithful attention during this hot and dry season. And our BIGGEST news is that we now have two new, modern ADA accessible restrooms in our parking lot. It’s about time! We and others in Groveland have pressed long and hard to make this happen for the community as a necessary component to our growing community (Right?) We are grateful to GCSD, Toulumne County, and many local business owners who have joined efforts and made this possible. Thank you so much!

The PM Garden club meets regularly to learn more about local history and horticulture from local speakers, we enjoy creating fun art projects, and sharing snacks. We have a good time. You would too, I’m sure! Want to learn more about local native plants and gardens? Join us for one of our regular second Monday meetings We also host tours of local gardens as they reach their best showy beauty. Just give us a call for upcoming dates, location and time.! Let's be friends! (and have fun in the garden...) Questions? contact Linda F. -209-770-6062 or Vicki S -650 773-2207. We meet most months, the 2nd Monday at 1:00 at the PM Lake Lodge. We can also be reached at P.O. Box 167, Groveland, CA 95321
