PML Boat Parade Wows

Virginia Richmond

The PML boat parade on July 5, organized by Friends of the Lake, entertained participants and spectators alike. The theme this year was “Under the Sea” and everyone enjoyed an amazing array of colorful and creatively decorated boats. We had some terrific patriotic decorations too.

First place in the electric boat category was won by Siri Lackovic and friends with a two-boat Under the Sea creation featuring Poseidon.

Gas pontoons winner was Lisa Artacho and friends in a two-story Yellow Submarine.

The winning ski boats were a gorgeous Under the Sea topped with a sprawling octopus by Paul Kuhn and family and an amazing Titanic complete with iceberg and Rose and Jack on a door by Tony Moore and friends.

As always, we’re impressed by the creativity and enthusiasm of our PML neighbors in the parade. Congratulations to all. Special thanks to Deborah Shassetz in the escort boat, keeping everyone going in the right direction and the PML boat patrol for keeping us safe,

The annual Independence Day boat parade is organized for the community by the Friends of the Lake Club.

First place in Electric Boat by Siri Lackovic and friends.

Ski Boat Winner by Tony Moore and friends.

Community Airport Day - October 4, 2025

Julie Anema

Save the date! The Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Association is looking forward to hosting the community on October 4 from 12:00 – 3:00 pm. Everyone is invited to this free event! Community Airport Day is held at the Pine Mountain Lake County Airport.

Dedicated events will include impressive flying demonstrations including formation flying and special aerial exhibitions. Visitors are welcome to view vintage and current airplanes up close during the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Bring a chair and enjoy the entertainment.

Our community is fortunate to have a local airport that enables added safety measures for medical and fire emergencies where planes can be of aid in keeping us safe. The airport provides a home for PML pilots, some that commute by air to work. Visitors flying into the area have a place to land and flight services offer all a view of Yosemite from the sky. The local EAA chapter offers a Young Eagles program that takes you from a free introductory flight for youth into the world of aviation.

Come out to the airport and spend the afternoon. Admission is free.

PINE NEEDLERS QUILT GUILD

SANDY SMITH

We are half way thru summer...boy its flying by! I hope that your summer days have been filled with wonderful memories, and lots of good things.

Another successful retreat in the books! Everyone had a great time, and much was accomplished. Cathy Lincoln finished her first ever quilt. Good job! The 49er auction quilt was started. Its going to be beautiful, and unique. Thank you to those who are working on getting it completed.

Tuesday August 19th @ 10 a.m. under the Library, will be our next Guild meeting. The Meet N Greet will be at 9:30 if you want to come a little early and enjoy each other. A great time to catch up with what has been happening. Also if you bring your lunch, you can stay after and sew with us til 3.

Something new for our Guild...Block of the month Hostess. Will be interesting and lots of new ideas forthcoming. As of this writing there were a couple of spaces left. A hostess is responsible to have a block ready for her month, to present to the body. Then we sign up for one, take it home, bring it back finished the next month. Then someone gathers them all, sews together and makes something wonderful. It will be fun!

If you are interested in showing your small quilts, wall hangings, and table toppers at the Library, see Sharon Kenyon for all the info.

What's next is the 49er Festival. Thank you to Shirley Horn for helping us with the Beautiful for the Guild will provide for the Festival. This is always a big fun community event. Come on down and be a part!

A personal thank you to all the Guild members who helped with the London Project. Without your help we could never have met our goal and time goal too. We made many kids happy with their new quilts, and pillow cases filled with toys and surprises. A special thank you to Jean and Anita for the pillow cases.

The Quilt Show is not too far away, Oct. 3rd and 4th. You will hear more about this at the next meeting.

Advent projects are creeping up on us...I am working on mine, are you?

This months meeting date is August 19th...10 a.m. under the Library. See you then!

If you have any questions, you can call President Judi {with an I} @ 650 245-1439 or V.P. Michele {with one l} @209 962-4327.

TOURNAMENT TEE SELECTION

Many of our tournaments allow players to select what tees they will play from. It is important that players sign up for the correct tees. Any player can play from the Gold tees, regardless of their age or index, if they so choose. But only players that qualify may play from the Purple/Green tees. To qualify a player must be 70, or older, or have an index of 18.7, or higher. It is very difficult for the Golf Shop to make tee changes at the last minute. Any player that plays from incorrect tees risks disqualification. Typically, one team member will sign up a 4-man or 2-man team, so it is imperative that that team member sign up their team from the correct tees.

WEBSITE TOURNAMENT SIGN UP

Please continue to use the website, pmlmgc.com, to sign up and pay for tournaments. Using the website for tournament sign up and payment makes it easier for the club and the Golf Shop to manage tournaments. Go to pmlmgc.com to see the tournament schedule.

JOIN THE MEN’S GOLF CLUB

Any male persons who are current property owners, their siblings, sons, nephews, sons-in-law, and PMLA employees are eligible to join the men’s golf club. Go to pmlmgc.com and click on the button, Join the Club, to see the many benefits of club membership, as well as the ability to sign up on line. Applications are also available in the Golf Shop, or you can contact our Handicap/Membership Chair, Ted Toffey. Email Ted at handicap@pmlmgc.com, if you have any questions about club membership, or, if you’re a current member, your NCGA handicap index.

GARDEN CLIPPINGS

Linda Neuschwander – PINE MOUNTAIN GARDEN CLUB

Welcome to summer! Groveland is looking golden and gorgeous as it beckons locals and visitors alike to spend a cool and quiet morning walking with friends under the spreading canopy of our giant native oaks and incense cedars. The wild turkeys, blue jays, mule deer and chittery squirrels would be glad to join you. Don’t miss it! And hopefully all of our yards and lots are thoroughly mowed and all woody yard waste of every sort has been relocated to designated green waste sites for safe disposal. PLEASE BE FIRE WISE!

The PM Garden Club has been enjoying the summer spiffing up our own gardens and visiting the gardens of friends and neighbors. But we have not neglected our beloved Jail Garden and are very grateful to members and associates who have spent time keeping the place watered, trimmed and weeded. Thank you for your faithful attention during this hot and dry season.

A fun and inspiring outing which we enjoyed occurred in May when we visited the private garden of one of our members. This garden had everything! Fruit trees, grapes, berries, herbs, veggies, (I loved the asparagus bed!) native plantings, inspiring rock features, beautiful specimen trees, all set off by the beautiful, wild Sierra Foothill location. The hosts did all the work themselves. It showed us all what possibilities really are available. And our hosts treated us all to a lovely gourmet luncheon! Everyone came away with inspiration by the possibilities of hosting our garden tour in the future.

Want to learn more about Local native plants and gardens? Join our club! Let's be friends! (and have fun in the garden...) Questions? contact any one of us. We meet most months, the 2nd Monday at 1:00 at the PM Lake Lodge. We can be reached at P.O. Box 167, Groveland, CA 95321

CALLING ALL Pickleball players of all ages and skill levels.

5 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT POACH

The poach shot in pickleball is effective because it breaks patterns and disrupts the regular flow of a point. Timed properly, it can shake your opponent’s confidence, keep them guessing and more defensive, and shrink the game at the kitchen line.

There’s no rulebook for when you can or can’t poach, but a common and effective moment

is after a solid third shot drop by your partner. Here’s why, and how to execute it to perfection.

It’s all about timing. Your team serves, the other team returns, now your teammate is sending back a third shot drop. This is when you plan your attack.

Watch your partner’s shot. As your teammate drops, take two big steps in toward the kitchen. Watch the ball’s path. If it’s a quality drop, follow it up to the net, hedging towards the middle but not overcommitting. Now comes the fun part.

Don’t commit too soon. Split step in front of the ball so that you’re stable, balanced, and ready to decide whether to stay put or go hunting.

Watch their paddle face. Now look at their hips, head, and paddle face to gauge where the next shot is going. Odds are if they open up towards your partner’s side of the court, the poach will be in play.

Attack on contact. As soon as the ball is hit towards your partner, it’s time to act. Take a few hard lateral steps in its direction and focus on making solid contact with your return, keeping it low, hard, and down the middle. Successful poach, executed.

PICKLEBALL STRATEGY by TANNER TOMASSI

Strategy fundamentals that were gospel when you first started probably aren’t as relevant anymore. Some, believe it or not, are totally outdated.

A red book with white text

AI-generated content may be incorrect.Myth #1 — Move as one. Standard convention says you move from the baseline to the kitchen as if you’re attached to your partner with a short string. He moves, you move. Modern pickleball demands different. When your partner is hitting a third, take two steps in and watch the ball’s flight. If it’s a good drop, crash the net and apply pressure wherever possible, giving your bestie time to join you

A red book with white text

AI-generated content may be incorrect.Myth #2 — Forehand covers middle. The game simply moves too fast for this to apply anymore. Instead, here’s Tanner’s truth-bomb: When the ball is diagonal to you, you cover middle. This allows your partner to shade toward the line and limits all confusion about who’s got what. Easy peasy.

A red book with white text

AI-generated content may be incorrect.Myth #3 — Heavy drives win points. Gone are the days when you can blast a drive through your opponent’s paddle for an easy point. Instead, take 25% off and focus on heavy topspin that drops low over the net. This way, the next shot has to be hit up to clear the net rather than down. Advantage you.

A red book with white text

AI-generated content may be incorrect.Myth #4 — Always target the weaker opponent. If one opponent is significantly weaker than the other, it can be tempting to hit nearly every shot their way. Don’t fall into this trap. This allows the stronger player to cheat way over while the weaker one barely has to move. Instead, keep the better player honest by hitting lots of balls his way. Now, attack the weaker side when the moment strikes.

Myth #5 — Lose in the right way. You improve most by putting what you’re practicing into action in pressure situations. So, sign up for an event, then pick a new skill and ride it all the way through. If you lose, you lose. But that skill will get way better, way faster, guaranteed.

PML Lake Swim Results

Virginia Richmond

Congratulations to the 35 intrepid swimmers who completed the 2025 Lake Swim from Dunn Court to the Marina Beach, organized by Friends of the Lake. Some swam for speed and many people did it just for the personal challenge. It’s one-third of a mile and it’s not easy! Many thanks to the PML boat patrol and our kayak safety line of Dora and Dennis Hockett for keeping everyone safe.

First place at a very fast 6 minutes and 48 seconds was Groveland resident Gabriel Hendersen. Gabriel is a student at Summerville High where he’s on the swim team and he is working at the marina this summer. Second place at 7:08 was Sophia Pietkiewicz from Fremont, visiting her PML family. Sophia is a graduate student in San Francisco studying urban planning. Sophia was on the swim team and played water polo in school. Her dad swam too, but couldn’t keep up with her. Third place went to part-timer Ilya Emelianov at 7:21. Ilya is a rising senior at St. Francis School in Mountain View where he’s on the swim team. He likes speed and hopes to be a race car driver someday.

Our favorite final swimmer is Barbara Whitlesey, well into her 80s, who swims every year and arrived at 21:47. Everyone received a certificate honoring their achievement. Congratulations to all!

Special thanks to Friends of the Lake event organizers Karen Hopkins and Mike Gustafson, and Weldon and Janis Killion who timed the race.

To join Friends of the Lake and receive information on each upcoming event, please send your contact information and a check for $20 per family to Friends of the Lake, PO Box 591, Groveland, CA 95321. Be sure to include your email address, as all club communication is by email.

Fastest lake swimmers: Sophia Pietkiewicz (2), Gabriel Hendersen (1) Ilya Emelianov (3)

ROOFBB Fundraisers Continue to Build Momentum in Groveland

ROOFBB is incredibly fortunate to be part of a community that consistently shows up to support local causes. This past June, The Pizza Factory generously hosted a Monday night fundraiser for ROOFBB, providing a fun and delicious way to raise money for our mission. Thanks to the warm hospitality of Ariana and her team, over $200 was raised and we sold a number of SummerFest raffle tickets and BBQ meals. We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with our neighbors while raising vital funds for our ongoing programs. Thank you, Pizza Factory, for being such a valued community partner!

Now, we're setting our sights on one of Groveland’s most beloved annual events: the 49er Festival, coming up on Saturday, September 20th. ROOFBB will once again be proudly participating in several ways. You'll see us marching in the parade alongside other community groups—always a highlight as we wave to familiar faces along the route.

But that’s just the beginning. ROOFBB also coordinates the Raffle and Live Auction areas of the festival, and preparations are already underway. We are actively collecting donations—if you have an item, experience, or service to contribute, we’d love to hear from you!

In the weeks leading up to the event, look for us around town selling raffle tickets. They’re just $1 each, and the prizes are incredible—from jewelry and gift cards to family fun baskets and more. On festival day, head to Mary Laveroni Park to grab a bidding paddle and join the fun at the Live Auction. This year’s auction features exciting items such as a backyard pizza oven set (with all the toppings), a case of fine wine, and incredible resort getaways!

The 49er Festival marks the ROOFBB organization’s second major fundraiser this year, following a successful SummerFest in June. Proceeds from both events go directly toward our mission—supporting local schools, funding community improvement projects, and helping neighbors in need. Every ticket purchased and every bid placed helps us continue this important work. We can’t wait to see you there!

Want to learn more about ROOFBB? Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Nextdoor. Looking for a volunteer opportunity that's both fun and fulfilling? ROOFBB is the place for you! We also welcome donations to support our cause.

Thank you for being part of our community and helping us make a difference!
