ANNUAL PML BOAT PARADE – JULY 5
VIRGINIA RICHMOND
The Marina is open and the lake is getting busy! Time to start planning your boat parade decorations. The PML Boat Parade is on July 5th at 6:00pm. All PML boat owners are invited to participate. The theme this year is “Under the Sea.” Take your inspiration from The Little Mermaid, or use your imagination. Of course, patriotic decorations are also welcome. We’re always impressed with the creativity of PML boaters! Prizes will be awarded in four categories: 1.) electric boats, 2.) gas pontoon boats, 3.) fishing or ski boats, and 4.) non-motorized boats such as canoes, sailboats, and kayaks. Sign up at the Marina store to participate in the parade. There’s no fee.
The annual PML Boat Parade is organized by Friends of the Lake. If you have any questions, please call Virginia at 1-209-962-6336.
PML PICKLEBALL CLUB
PAM RODGERS
COME OUT AND PLAY
If you’ve spent more than five minutes on a pickleball court, you’ve probably heard it—the language of the game. And we’re not just talking about “dinks,” “Ernes,” and “third shot drops.” No, we’re talking about the subtext—those little phrases we say (and hear) that, when translated, reveal everything from frustration and fatigue to tactical shade. We dug into player banter, courtside conversations, and community commentary to bring you this slightly- too-real but painfully accurate translation guide to pickleball talk.
POLITE ON THE OUTSIDE, SALTY ON THE INSIDE
“Let’s just focus on good energy.” - “Please stop being salty and hit a clean dink.”
“I just switched paddles—still getting used to it.” - “It’s the paddle’s fault, not mine.”
“They were really consistent.” - “They weren’t even that good. We just couldn’t finish a point to save our lives.”
“We didn’t win, but we had fun!” - “We got obliterated. But I’m trying not to cry about it.”
“Hey, do you want to stack?” - “You are not the forehand hero you think you are. Please move.”
“I just need to warm up a bit.” - “I’ve missed six shots. This is my excuse now.”
“That was a good rally!” - “I’m exhausted. Can we please sit down?”
“Let’s keep it social.” - “Stop hitting 80 mph drives at my grandma.”
“You’ve been playing great lately!” - “I need to say this before I start targeting you mercilessly.”
WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN (SINGLES EDITION)
“Nice shot.” - “I had no shot. I’m annoyed and masking it with sarcasm.”
“That was just out.” - “Pretty sure it was in, but I’m calling it out anyway.”
“Mind if we slow it down a bit?” - “I’m running on fumes and dreams right now.”
“Just working on some things today.” - “I’m getting crushed and need you to think it’s intentional.”
“It’s good practice either way.” - “This is me emotionally coping with getting smoked.”
“One more game?” - “If I win. If I lose, I’m faking an ankle sprain.”
“You’re playing well.” - “I regret inviting you.”
“Let’s play skinny singles.” - “I don’t want to run anymore. Please don’t make me.”
“Great workout today!” - “I didn’t win, but at least I sweat.”
“You’re hitting lines today.” - “You’re probably out, but I’m too tired to argue.”
“Nice get.” - “That lob was lucky and I hate how well it worked.”
REAL TALK BETWEEN PICKLEBALL COUPLES
“You got it!” - “Please get this one, I’m still recovering from the last 10.”
“Nice try.” - “Why did you try that?”
“That’s okay, don’t worry about it.” - “I’ve internally worried about it for three points now.”
“We’ll get the next one.” - “We’d better, because I’m emotionally at match point.”
“Move your feet!” - “If I say one more word, this ends in silence on the drive home.”
“Let’s just have fun out here.” - “I can tell you’re already mad and we haven’t even warmed up.”
“You’re crowding me a little.” - “Back off before I call a kitchen violation on your ego.”
“Want to switch sides next game?” - “I need to play near someone who doesn’t ignore me and the middle ball.”
“Let’s not play together next round—mix it up!” - “I need a break. From you. For 15 minutes.”
“Great game!” - “We survived. Let’s never speak of it again.”
THE POINT?
Pickleball isn’t just a game of strategy—it’s a game of subtext. And once you start picking up on the real meaning behind the words, it gets way more fun. So the next time someone says “good energy only,” remember: it might be code for “just hit a drop that actually drops.” And hey—if all else fails? Just nod, smile, and get back to dinking. Because the real translation of “Nice shot!”? That’s universal.

Friends of the Lake June and July Events
Virginia Richmond
Friends of the Lake is gearing up for a fun-filled summer. We had an excellent presentation from Dr. Stephen McCord in May, updating us on the care and management of PML’s lake, especially given the threat of the golden mussel and other invasive species.
Our June event is a poker run on June 22, by boat around the lake, with lots of prizes. You don’t have to know how to play poker. Call Larry Santa Maria at 962-7904 for more information and to reserve your seat. Cost is just $5 per person.
We’ll be very busy in July with three great events. First up is the annual Boat Parade at 6:00pm on July 5th. This year’s theme is “Under the Sea.” There are prizes for the best decorations in each boat category. Sign-up at the Marina Store. No fee.
Then, on July 12, we organize the Lake Swim, a chance to swim in open water from Dunn Court to the Marina, a distance of about one-third of a mile. This event is open to proficient swimmers over age 10. Cash prizes for the fastest swimmers, although most participants do it just for fun and personal achievement. Sign-up at Dunn Court at 2:30pm on July 12. No fee.
Finally, on July 13, we are pleased to host “Music at the Marina” with a 5:00pm potluck dinner and the music of “Kaleidoscope,” featuring classic rock, blues, country and R&B hits. Free for members, $10 for guests.
Friends of the Lake is a social club for people who enjoy our lake and support its equitable use for all. We hold monthly events at the lake during the summer months. To join Friends of the Lake and receive information on each upcoming event, please send your contact information and a check for $20/family to Friends of the Lake, PO Box 591, Groveland, CA 95321. Be sure to include your email address, as all club communication is by email.

TOURNAMENT TEE SELECTION
Many of our tournaments allow players to select what tees they will play from. It is important that players sign up for the correct tees. Any player can play from the Gold tees, regardless of their age or index, if they so choose. But only players that qualify may play from the Purple/Green tees. To qualify a player must be 70, or older, or have an index of 18.7, or higher. It is very difficult for the Golf Shop to make tee changes at the last minute. Any player that plays from incorrect tees risks disqualification. Typically, one team member will sign up a 4-man or 2-man team, so it is imperative that that team member sign up their team from the correct tees.
WEBSITE TOURNAMENT SIGN UP
Please continue to use the website, pmlmgc.com, to sign up and pay for tournaments. Using the website for tournament sign up and payment makes it easier for the club and the Golf Shop to manage tournaments. Go to pmlmgc.com to see the tournament schedule.

STCHS Name The Bear Contest “Winner”
PATRICIA GIBSON
In January the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society (STCHS) started it’s 2025 membership drive by inviting the local community to become members via a postcard offering a “Name the Bear Contest”. This generated several hundred names! We then narrowed the names down to 4 and asked visitors from Tenaya Elementary School to select their favorite name. The bear is the biggest attraction for our smallest visitors. The four most popular names were: Berry,
Leonard, Charlie and Grover!
TA-DA! The children voted to name me Berry!
If you have not yet had a chance to visit Berry, please come by and say hello! The museum is open Fri-Sat-Sun from 10a-2pm.
STCHS is a 501C3 Non-Profit charity – Tax ID #: 77-0132781; Donations are tax-deductible.
Pine Mountain Garden Club
Linda Neuschwander
Well, we really have turned the weather corner now! Some warm days, some cool days, no snow (fingers crossed!) Let the mowing begin!
In April we enjoyed a fun and educational workshop with Arborist Michael Carmichael, demonstrating transplanting shrubs & trees for pots, pruning & bonsai tips, soils & fertilizer. We all dug in and got our hands dirty as we gathered practical experience!
May 4th, featured our field trip to Jamestown & Sonora, plus –sponsored by the Sierra Rock Garden Society, to Rebecca Lance’s home garden, showcasing Rebecca’s stunningly beautiful native plant collection, followed by trip to Standard Nursery for plant sale supplies (and other garden goodies!) made for a perfect gardener’s day.
All this led up to our big event for the calendar year, -our Mother’s Day plant and baked treats sale. This fun sale is an event we host for our local families and neighbors and all others. We sold lots of carefully tended colorful plants, veggie starts, garden accessories and, new for us this year, amazing colorful hanging flower baskets. We showed off our carefully tended jail garden, (the midnight purple Siberian iris are gorgeous and plentiful this year!) The sale was a one day event as usual, but feel free to stop by the jail any time and take in our little spot of local color. --And a brand new visitor’s bathroom-- (soon to include a marvelous mosaic mural of local color crafted by artist Barbara Bussler of Black Bear Mosaics.
Many more interesting plans are in the works. SO STAY TUNED!
Want to learn more about Local native plants and gardens? Join us! Let's be friends! (and have fun in the garden...) Questions? contact club one of us at 650-773-2207 or 209 770 6063. ROOFBB recently held its 3rd Annual First Responder Appreciation BBQ on May 4 in Groveland, CA, to honor and thank the dedicated first responders who serve the community every day. It was a great partnership with Yosemite Chamber of Commerce and GCSD. A big shout out also goes to MarVal who donated a large portion of the food that day! The event brought together our fabulous first responder agencies and their families for a day of good food, camaraderie, and recognition of their invaluable service. Guests enjoyed a hot dog or hamburger, games, and listened to heartfelt messages from local officials, expressing gratitude for the bravery and commitment of the first responders who go above and beyond to keep our community safe. THANK YOU FIRST RESPONDERS!
Looking ahead, ROOFBB is gearing up for the highly anticipated SummerFest, scheduled for Saturday, June 14th in Groveland, CA from 12pm-4pm.
