The inevitable Sunday afternoon baseball game was played on the "City" field about where the Pine Mountain Lake entry gate is located today. The team, supposedly made up of city workers but often including ringers brought in from Bay Area college and professional teams, took on opponents from Stockton, Sonora, Tuolumne City, Jimtown and Angels and usually won. Betting on the outcome was a favorite pastime of many a faithful supporter.
One of the best-known "City" employees was Doctor John P. Degnan who took charge of the Hetch Hetchy Hospital in Groveland early in 1921. "Doc" to most who knew him, was on call virtually around the clock whatever the emergency. Whether it be an injury at the dam site or in the tunnel, a mishap on the railroad or delivery of a baby on an isolated farm, the good doctor was always "Johnny-on-the-spot." He was even known to commandeer a locomotive on occasion to get to the source of the trouble. |
